



In 1985 Taylor's good friend and former co-star Rock Hudson died of AIDS. Using
her fame as a strong voice in the fight against the deadly disease, the actress
became the founding national chairman of the American Foundation for AIDS
Research (AmFAR).
In 1992 Taylor received a third Oscar when she was presented with the Jean
Hersholt Humanitarian Award in recognition for her work with AIDS.
In 1991, the actress founded the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation. which has distributed
more than $8 million to AIDS organizations around the world.
Taylor has devoted much time and energy to AIDS-related charities and
fundraising. She helped start the American Foundation for AIDS Research
(amfAR) http://www.amfar.org/. By 1999, she had helped to raise an
estimated $50,000,000 to fight the disease.
In1993, she received the AFI Life Achievement Award. And in 2002, she was a
Kennedy Center Honoree.
